Bereavement

Bereavement is one of the most traumatic events we experience in life. We particularly think about the loss of a husband or wife, but grief can also occur when our life circumstances change, such as at retirement, or it may be due to the loss of a child or another family member. Perhaps the grief is due to the loss of a pet to which we were closely attached. Grief is an intensely personal experience.

The loss triggers the start of a journey as we struggle to navigate many emotional issues such as anger, loneliness and depression, that are attached to it. Most of us are poorly equipped to deal with these issues on our own, and need support along the journey.

There is no escaping the journey. If we relapse or turn to alcohol or drugs to numb our pain, this may possibly help us to briefly forget, in the short term. However, the grief will remain, and will need to be dealt with once the numbness wears off.
